A Carbon Fiber Printer By Any Other Name

March 15, 2017 | By Don Musilli | In Blog

There are a 3D Printers and then there are 3D PRINTERS. I am fortunate to own and operate some of the most reliable and well-built 3D Printers on the market today. Our stable at LiteWorld includes 5 LulzBot TAZ printers ( 2 TAZ 5, 2 TAZ Mini and 1 TAZ 6 ). We also have a Prusa i3 Mk2 Diy printer, a MakerBot Replicator 5th Gen ( Oldest) an XYZ Noble 1 Laser Resin Printer, a Type A Machines Series 1 Pro and our newest addition…..Markforged Mark Two Carbon Fiber printer.

I un-boxed the Mark Two yesterday and the first thing that struck me was the weight of the unit. It is all metal and very heavy. It comes with a plexiglas cover that rotates up and back to allow access to the build platform and samples of all the materials it can print, Including:  true Carbon Fiber, Kevlar,  Fiberglass, Nylon and Onyx.  It even comes with a Pelican Container to keep the Nylon materials dry prior to printing.

The operation of the unit is done through its Eiger cloud based software program making this a true wi-fi connected printer. I am waiting for my new computer to show up so I can start playing with the printers capabilities. Actually playing is the wrong word as the materials for this unit are somewhat pricey so I will be using it for prototyping and limited production parts replacements for some of our customers.

In my next blog I will show (hopefully ) some of the objects I have printed using my new toy. I am looking forward to showing the young kids, teens and adults that take our 3D Modeling and 3D Printing classes this new machine. Of course they can look but I am not printing Rachael’s key chain on this unit. Those projects are for the MakerBot.
