3D Printing or Additive Manufacturing 2017

New GE Additive Manufacturing Operation in Pittsburgh

December 31, 2016 | By Don Musilli | In About Us, Blog

3D Printing and Additive Manufacturing will be in the news in 2017 more than ever before. Why? Because the business community, schools and entrepreneurs have finally figured out that this technology has the capability of changing the way we make, design, prototype and test any type of product anywhere for 1/100th the cost of traditional manufacturing and in 1/10th the space. It also requires people with specific skills but fewer of them.

LiteWorld is moving into more limited production modes in 2017 and will be looking at expanding its 3D Printing operations to include more training for the youth of the community and developing a “start your own business” process for people that want to be on the leading edge of this technology working from their homes. For those of you who believe that Manufacturing is coming back to the US, you need to understand that is not going to happen, at least in the traditional sense.

Having put together a company that makes commercial grade products and is now in its 32nd year of operation, it is very difficult to create a business venture that requires expensive equipment, thousands of feet of space and trying to be competitive in a market where anyone can search the internet for prices for any type of product or service 24/7. You have to be a “niche” type company that makes something that is unique and difficult enough that other people or companies find it difficult to enter.

For an Additive Manufacturing facility one could have 4 to 6 3D Printers of various capabilities in a space no larger than 1,000 to 1,500 square feet. This includes office space and room for another five 3D Printers. It could, in reality , operate in a large 2-car garage if necessary. Kind of how Steve Jobs started Apple.
