3D Printed Replacement Parts
One of the phrases I use when people ask me, “what can you make with the 3D printer?” I answer, “there aint not nuthin” we can’t make. It’s true. If you can think of it we can make it. That includes replacement parts for almost any device, vehicle, machine or object.
Now that we can print in materials such as nylon, polycarbonate, carbon fiber, fiberglas and high temperature PLA and ABS, we can replace most objects that were once made from plastic or metal ( small parts in metal ). While much of our attention on developing our skills with 3D Pritners revolved around statues and fun things to make, today our focus is on the more practical side of additive manufacturing.
Today, 3d Printed replacement parts and prototyping have become our most soft after service. Now that the public better understands how 3D printing works and have seen the benefits of this technology, they are more confident that their parts replacement issues can be solved without high costs and imperfect parts. The ability for us to go through a number of iterations in a day allows us to create that perfect “match” part from many materials and often the part is better and stronger than the original.
We are currently in the process of making a two-part housing to fit over an electric drill component unit that is being re-purposed for another application. The entrepreneurs that brought this idea to us had looked at other options for prototyping and design and found the traditional metal fabrication and injection molding processes to have extreme up-front costs and only wanted large run projects. Our approach is much simpler. We design the parts on 3D software and then print them out and see if they work. If we have to make a modification we simply tweak the software design then print it again. We can repeat this process many times in a few days until we get it right.
